1. Check what takes up the most space

Go to Settings > System > Storage. Here you will find a summary of space used by apps, temporary files, documents, and more. Click on each item to analyze in detail.

2. Use the “Disk Cleanup” tool

Type “Disk Cleanup” in the Start menu, select drive C, and check all the listed items (especially “Temporary files,” “System files,” and “Recycle Bin”). Click OK to free up space.

3. Delete temporary files

In Settings > Storage click on “Temporary files” and remove:

  • System cache
  • No longer needed Windows update files
  • Image previews

4. Empty the Recycle Bin

It often contains many files taking up space unnecessarily. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon > “Empty Recycle Bin.”

5. Uninstall unused programs

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by size and remove apps you no longer use (for example, pre-installed software, games, heavy suites).

6. Activate “Storage Sense”

This is an automatic feature that periodically deletes temporary files and empties the Recycle Bin. Enable it from Settings > Storage and customize the frequency.

7. Move large files to an external drive or cloud

Documents, photos, and personal videos can be saved on:

  • External hard drive
  • OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox
  • USB stick

8. Delete previous versions of Windows

If you just updated your system, you might have a folder called Windows.old. To delete it:

  • Open Disk Cleanup
  • Click on “Clean up system files”
  • Check “Previous Windows installations”

9. Compress rarely used folders

Right click on a folder > “Properties” > “Compress contents to save space”. Useful for archives and older projects.

10. Use programs like WinDirStat

WinDirStat visually shows which folders and files take up the most disk space, helping you take targeted action.

Conclusion

Freeing up disk space doesn’t mean deleting everything. By following these simple steps you can recover several gigabytes and speed up your PC without risking deleting important documents. Try even just the first 3 methods and you’ll notice the difference right away.
