In winter, it keeps us company on chilly nights. How many times have you said to yourself: “Tonight, blanket, sofa, and a good movie”? Let’s see which latest generation TVs help us spend less.

How much energy does a television consume?

The amount of energy a TV consumes mainly depends on the usage time. For example, a 40” 88-watt TV will use 88 Wh in one hour. The estimated annual consumption will be around 63 Kwh with a cost of about 13 euros per year.

Three factors influence the amount of energy consumed:

  • the size of the device
  • the maximum power
  • the usage time

Obviously, we are talking about latest generation models with an A++ energy class (the highest) which is excellent for saving on your bill and important for understanding how much an appliance consumes.

TV Models

Say goodbye to the “old” LCD TVs, technology moves forward and new models are taking over the market. Flat-screen televisions can be of two types: Plasma or LCD. Most TVs you’ll find for sale will be LCD with backlit screens using fluorescent or LED lamps. The latter model, besides improving image quality, allows you to save energy.

Resolution

One of the most important aspects a TV must have is excellent resolution. HD ready models are not recommended because they have a 1280×720 pixel resolution and do not allow you to enjoy good high definition viewing. To watch HD content, it’s better to choose Full HD models (1920×1080 pixels).

Regarding Ultra HD TVs (also called 4k), these are latest generation models that offer very high resolution: 3840×2048 pixels. Here the price rises, around 700 euros for a 55-inch TV (it’s recommended to buy at least a 40-inch). Carefully assess your usage habits before purchasing an Ultra HD TV. In Italy, there are still no channels broadcasting in 4k, excluding premium subscriptions and Netflix.

The new generation: OLED TVs

The most advanced technology concerns OLED TVs (organic light emitting diode) which have color screens capable of emitting their own light and do not need illumination from external lights (like liquid crystal displays). These are thin displays, even foldable, that don’t require large amounts of energy to operate. The images are excellent with balanced colors and bright lights. The downside of these TVs is the price, although now on the market more affordable models can be found.

 Smart TV

For web lovers (and not only), TV 2.0 was created. When we talk about Smart TVs, we mean interactivity: social networks and on-demand content. These TVs are connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or cable (LAN socket). Specifically, this “smart” TV allows you to:

  • Browse online
  • Watch free on-demand programs
  • Access multimedia services
  • Streaming
  • Social network
  • Record your favorite programs

To use the TV in any room of your home, before buying a model, check if it has built-in Wi-Fi (cheaper versions lack it). Another essential feature for TVs with wireless support is compatibility with technologies like Google Cast and Miracast, which allow sending audio and video to the TV wirelessly.

Attention: this smart TV is not a computer, so don’t think you can work on it; it operates through a remote control.

For anyone who doesn’t want to buy a Smart TV: thanks to new technologies, it’s possible to turn a traditional TV into a smart TV. In fact, with an Android TV Box, the television assumes the functions of a monitor: once connected to the TV Box via HDMI cable, it allows you to browse the internet, watch videos and images, use USB sticks, and listen to music.

The Android TV Box runs on the Android operating system and is similar to a small console with a display showing date, time, and on/off mode. Thanks to HDMI-CEC technology, this device can be controlled with the TV remote or a specific app via Wi-Fi.

Which TV to buy?

As we have seen, every TV has specific functions with advantages and disadvantages. The advice is to choose a model suitable for your needs with an energy class A, A+, or A++ to save on your electricity bill.
