Increasingly larger screens, fingerprint sensors far from the eyes, noble materials: this seems to be the formula for creating a top-of-the-line smartphone at the start of 2018. A formula that the Chinese manufacturer OnePlus has also decided to follow to create its latest device, the OnePlus 5T.
The review of the new OnePlus 5T speaks of a device beautiful to look at and use, a true flagship that increasingly resembles the iPhone.
Let’s analyze this OnePlus 5T in order, starting with the box. The white and red packaging contains, of course, the smartphone, an ultra-fast charger, a silicone case, and nothing else. A simple but more than sufficient kit to fully enjoy the potential of this smartphone. The case is nothing special but will help you protect the device in the first few days while you wait for a better-quality case, which you can find on Amazon or on the manufacturer’s website.
The materials used for the OnePlus 5T are the best you can ask for at the moment: glass and metal. The design repeats what was already seen on the OnePlus 5 and simply moves the fingerprint sensor to the back to make room for a longer screen now featuring an 18:9 ratio, in pure Apple style. The build quality is truly excellent thanks to careful finishing and a pleasant sense of solidity and resistance that is conveyed when holding the smartphone. The side buttons remain in place and, like on the iPhone, there is also a switch on the side that allows toggling between ring, do not disturb, and silent modes. On the back, in the upper-middle part of the body, is the fingerprint sensor. Although the sensor is flush with the cover, it is easily reachable and its performance is simply excellent. Also on the back of the device is the dual rear camera; the lenses protrude slightly and can be a bit annoying if you use the smartphone without a case.
Software and hardware of the OnePlus 5T do not disappoint. Beneath its attractive appearance hides one of the best hardware setups available, combining the Snapdragon 835 processor and 8 GB of RAM. The excellent components ensure smooth performance at all times and Android always runs perfectly even under heavy stress. The software optimization, present on the device through the OxygenOS system, is spectacular and allows excellent performance on every occasion, benefiting also the 3300 mAh battery, which allows up to 2 days of use under standard usage conditions.
Another strong point of the OnePlus 5T is its screen made with a 6-inch panel based on good quality Amoled technology capable of delivering vibrant colors and excellent maximum brightness. Readability under direct sunlight is very good and overall the display’s behavior is always above the average of competing Chinese devices, although it does not reach the brilliance of the iPhone X or Note 8.
The camera takes inspiration from the iPhone’s and combines two lenses of 16 and 20 megapixels capable of taking high-quality photos even in low-light conditions. The video sector is also good, with the possibility to record up to 4k and the front camera is equally valid.
OnePlus decided to combine on the 5T the presence of the fingerprint sensor with facial recognition. We already discussed the former above; as for the latter, we can only say it pleasantly surprised us. The technology adopted by the Chinese manufacturer is less sophisticated and less precise than the complex one adopted by Apple on the iPhone X but works well and with more than good accuracy. Face recognition allows quick unlocking, even in poor lighting conditions, and is not fooled by various attempts at involuntary or forced unlocks. Face unlocking therefore works very well, and only in complete darkness does it have some recognition problems.
We can affirm that the OnePlus 5T is an excellent Android smartphone, one of the best to buy at the beginning of 2018. This device marks a small step forward compared to version 5 but increasingly approaches in quality and functions His Majesty the iPhone X. OnePlus is doing an excellent job and the 5T is yet another confirmation. The quality-price ratio is great thanks to a selling price of only 559 euros, much lower than all competing devices.
